In Aotearoa/New Zealand the trained/specialist GP is expected to deal with a wide range of typical issues, in the first instance.
General Practitioner (GP) Doctors and Practice Nurses (PN) take a history of the problem, do an examination, assess seriousness, make a (provisional) diagnosis, and start a discussion of plans. This may be sorted at the time with a treatment plan, such as advice or prescription.
However, lab tests may be ordered, and they will need to be reviewed; sometimes ‘normal’ results can be given out by phone, text, email via Health Care Assistant (HCA), PN or GP.
However, if further attention is needed, in person, the PN or GP will request another consultation. At this visit if the problem requires further tests or referral to another health care team, eg Public or Private Secondary Care specialist team then this can often be done then.
Our GPs provide a continuity of care, meaning you’ll see a familiar face who understands your health history. Whether it’s a routine check‑up, managing a new concern, continuing a course of therapy or returning to coordinate specialist referrals, we take time to listen & then explain what is going on. We aim to make every effort to provide consultations that are supportive, appropriate & specific to your needs.
We care for families across generations, from newborn checks to elder support. Our approach is relationship‑based, ensuring whānau (families) feel comfortable & understood.
We also will work closely with local schools, community groups, & health agencies to promote wellbeing beyond the clinic walls. By combining medical expertise with genuine community connection, we hope to help families thrive together.

Managing chronic conditions is about more than just medication – it’s about supporting your overall wellbeing. During your appointments, we take time to listen to your experience, answer any questions, & help you understand your condition. Almost all chronic conditions come from the way humans are made – very high drives, that can easily become addictions, especially with pressures & stresses from the industrial environment.
This is the human condition, so people with consciences are not guilty. We make no judgements about chronic illnesses or genuine accidents. Together, we’ll regularly review your symptoms & test results, discuss life situations (‘lifesits’) such as nutrition, eating patterns, digestion, physical activity, sleep & stress management, & agree on practical, positive, steps that that you can manage & that evolve with your circumstances.
Our team is committed to empowering you with knowledge, tools (skills) & encouragement to take an active (ongoing, updating & preventative) role in your health.

We provide pre‑pregnancy advice, early pregnancy confirmation, & ongoing health support, working alongside your chosen Lead Maternity Carer for coordinated care.
How to Choose a Lead Maternity Carer (LMC)
In New Zealand, most women and birthing people choose a midwife as their Lead Maternity Carer (LMC). Your LMC will guide you through pregnancy, birth, and the first weeks after your baby arrives. It’s best to contact a midwife as early as possible in pregnancy to ensure a booking that suits and secure the right Midwife ‘’fit for you and your whānau.
You can search for local midwives and learn more about your options here: Find a Midwife – Ministry of Health NZ (https://www.findyourmidwife.co.nz). If your GP & LMC are concerned about you & pregnancy, either will refer you to gynaecologist (early) or an obstetrician (later) in pregnancy. The GP team work closely with local midwives and maternity services, ensuring your care is safe, coordinated, and reassuring at every stage.
If you’re unsure where to start, our GP can provide advice and referrals to help you connect with the right LMC.

Her Metabolism Clinic provides routine health screenings, blood tests, cervical and prostate checks, along with lifestyle guidance. The aim is to identify potential issues early enough to empower you to make informed decisions, preventing lasting harm and giving you a chance to address wear and tear caused by lifestyle or life circumstances, sometimes referred to as ‘lifestats’.

Dr McGill’s thorough Metabolism Clinic and ongoing support programme are tailored to help you embrace healthy living practices for the long term.
Management of chronic conditions involves comprehensive care that extends beyond pharmaceutical interventions to encompass overall wellbeing. During consultations, patient experiences are thoroughly discussed, questions are addressed, and the nuances of each condition are reviewed to enhance understanding.
Certain reviews have identified metabolic concerns that necessitate tailored treatment plans. In such cases, Dr McGill develops actionable and personalized strategies regarding nutrition, dietary habits, sleep routines, stress management, and physical activity, assisting patients in establishing appropriate priorities. The objective is to provide clarity, instil confidence, and offer a practical pathway suited to individual lifestyles.
Together, we systematically evaluate symptoms and laboratory results, assess lifestyle factors such as nutrition, eating patterns, digestion, exercise, sleep, and stress management, and collaborate to determine steps that align with personal circumstances. Our team is dedicated to equipping you with essential knowledge, resources, and motivation to encourage active engagement in your health management.
Tried every diet but nothing seems to work? Conflicting advice can make it hard to know where to start. Understanding your nutrition and metabolism is often the first step toward finding an approach that actually works for you.
A healthy gut supports daily wellbeing and long-term health. Understanding how digestion, the gut microbiome, and inflammation influence metabolism can affect energy, mood, and disease prevention.
Struggling with persistent cravings or constant thoughts about food? We offer evidence-based approaches, from behavioural strategies to medications where appropriate, including GLP-1 therapies.
Some metabolic risks are inherited or develop gradually. We help identify hidden contributors such as insulin resistance, diabetes risk, thyroid dysfunction, gout, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and cardiovascular risk.
Metabolism is complex and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Our focus is on sensible, sustainable changes tailored to the individual, not extreme diets or quick fixes.
