What can I expect at my skin check appointment?

Your appointment with Dr Val Miller will include a whole-body skin assessment aimed at identifying any visible or reported skin concerns. You’ll have the opportunity to point out specific moles, spots, or changes you’ve noticed.

Where appropriate, dermatoscopic magnification may be used to examine particular lesions more closely. The appointment is designed as a first stage review to help determine whether any findings require monitoring, further assessment, or follow up.

Is this a full or comprehensive skin cancer check?

These appointments are not intended to be comprehensive dermatology or full skin mapping assessments. Instead, they provide a practical opportunity to:

• Identify any obvious or concerning skin changes
• Discuss specific areas of concern with Dr Miller
• Determine whether further investigation, monitoring, or referral is needed

If a more detailed assessment is required, Dr Miller will discuss this with you during the appointment. The Mini Skin Check will not include the treatment of any lesion found.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

To help make the most of your skin check:

• Wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to remove or adjust
• Avoid applying makeup or heavy moisturisers to areas you want checked
• Make a note of any moles or skin changes you’re concerned about, including how long they’ve been present or if they’ve changed recently
• Bring a list of any previous skin cancers or biopsies, if applicable

What happens if something concerning is found?

If Dr Miller identifies a lesion or area that needs further attention, she will discuss this with you and explain the recommended next steps. These may include:

• Monitoring the lesion over time
• Arranging a follow up appointment
• Organising further investigation, biopsy, or referral if indicated

All decisions will be made collaboratively, with clear explanations and guidance provided. Dr Miller has extensive experience in the removal of skin lesions and is happy to manage this where appropriate. For more complex lesions, she may recommend referral to a plastic surgeon to ensure the best possible outcome.

You may wish to book a skin check if you:

• Have noticed a new, changing, or unusual mole or spot
• Have had significant sun exposure or frequent sunburns
• Have a personal or family history of skin cancer

How much does the appointment cost

Skin check appointments are charged at our standard GP consultation fee. Any additional appointments, procedures, or referrals will be discussed with you if needed.
